FA3D Announces DIO X: A Multi-Tool Desktop 3D Printer Combining FDM and Full-Color UV Printing

FA3D today announced DIO X, a desktop 3D printer that combines FDM and full-color UV printing with swappable toolheads on a single machine. DIO X is now pre-launch on Kickstarter, with VIP reservations now open.
1. Your Personal Desktop Factory
Most desktop printers are locked into one toolhead and one job. Dioscuri-3D™ takes a different approach: a dual-base, quick-release design that lets you swap toolheads in seconds. Run the two toolheads independently, or let them work together on a single project.

Toolheads available at launch: FDM, UV, laser, paper cutting, and drawing pen.
Open by design. We plan to open-source the toolhead interface and design files, so makers can build, share, and improve their own toolheads for DIO X.

2. FDM Builds the Shape. UV Adds the Color
DIO X is built around a proprietary hybrid process that pairs FDM printing with full-color UV inkjet, running in sync. Traditional UV printers lay down a layer of white ink before adding color. DIO X skips that step: the FDM-printed part itself serves as the canvas for color. With no white ink to buy or refill, the machine needs less hardware and fewer consumables, which brings down the cost of full-color 3D printing.

Take a closer look at how it works:

The result:
3. Four Motors, 8X Efficiency
A refined Hybrid CoreXY system uses four motors to drive the two toolhead bases, keeping motion stable even at high speeds. That is how DIO X reaches 800 mm/s without giving up fine detail, easing the usual tradeoff between speed and print quality.
The dual-base design also enables parallel dual-head, four-color FDM printing, plus mirror and copy modes. Both heads run side by side without interfering with each other, so batch prototyping, small-run production, and printing several models at once take far less time. Overall throughput can reach up to 8x that of a conventional single-head printer.

4. Swap Nozzles in 1 Second
DIO X changes nozzles with a patented pivoting mechanism. The nozzle swings into place in about a second, with no pause in the print and very little recalibration, so switching between materials or nozzle sizes keeps the job moving.

Each nozzle also has a built-in metal shield that stops material from oozing while it is parked. That means you don’t need a wipe tower, which saves filament and print time on every multi-material job.

5. AI Sensors That Calibrate and Monitor
DIO X is equipped with a suite of AI-assisted sensors that watch over the whole print. They automatically calibrate the FDM and laser toolheads so each tool is positioned accurately, then keep analyzing print quality as the job runs and check the status and stability of the heated bed. With tolerances held to within ±25 microns, about a third of the width of a human hair, the system helps catch alignment problems and hidden defects early, so more of your prints come out right the first time.

6. True Unattended Continuous Printing
Removing finished parts by hand and stopping to restart prints are things every 3D printer owner knows too well. We rebuilt the conveyor heated bed from the ground up so the printer can take care of both on its own.

Schedule your prints in advance, and DIO X will print, eject each part, reset the bed and start the next job without anyone watching. It turns a desktop printer into a compact, automated micro-factory that can keep running batch after batch.
Built by People Who Needed It
“We built the thing we each needed, then realized everyone else needed it too,” said the FA3D team. “DIO X started from real problems: wanting to build a toy exactly the way you pictured it, hitting the wall between structure and color in a custom-order shop, or wanting a figurine to have the kind of gradient only a professional airbrush could produce. We designed a machine that solves those problems on one desk.”
